Dr Ellen Clark
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) Topamine is now a registered medicine that can be used in Aotearoa, New Zealand by dental clinicians. SDF can be used to arrest or to slow the progression of cavitated and non-cavitated active caries lesions in primary and permanent teeth. It can be used to prevent root caries from progressing in older adults, to treat tooth hypersensitivity or also pain related to exposed dentine or hypomineralised enamel. This presentation will discuss the history of SDF, it uses and applications. Provide resources for consent, tray setup as well as tips and tricks for placing SDF. Ellen will share some updates on research and some clinical cases. There will be giveaways at this presentation.
Biography
Dr Ellen Clark
BDS, MComDent (Dist), FICD
Ellen Clark graduated with a BDS from Otago in 2008 and became the first Dental House Surgeon at Whangarei Base Hospital. She worked with the Northland District Health Board for 15 years, serving as Clinical Director from 2015-2021. In 2017, she earned a public health specialist degree with distinction from Otago University.
In 2019, Ellen purchased a private practice in Mangawhai Heads, where she still practices. She is published in local and international dental journals, focusing on dental caries and health inequalities. Ellen was president of the New Zealand School and Community Oral Health Service Society (2020-2022) and is the current president of the New Zealand Society of Hospital Dentistry. She became a fellow of the International College of Dental Surgeons in 2022 and serves on the New Zealand Dental Association Board.
Ellen lives in Mangawhai with her husband and two children, enjoying the beach and gardening in her spare time.
